Permanent Residency

A permanent resident (PR) is someone who is given PR status by immigrating to Canada, but is not a Canadian citizen. There are many benefits associated with being a PR including the following: social benefits that Canadian citizens receive including a social insurance number and health care coverage depending on the province, the ability to live, work, or study anywhere in Canada, apply for Canadian citizenship, and be protected under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. To maintain PR status, individuals are required to be physically present in Canada for at least 730 days within a five year period or fall under one of several exceptions.

Family Class-Sponsorship

The goal of the family class sponsorship program is to reunite Canadian citizens and permanent residents with close family members. Sponsors who sponsor members under the family class promise that they will provide for the basic needs of their family members for a specified duration. Sponsorship applications involving spouses, common-law or conjugal partners, dependent children, adopted children, and orphans are given priority.

Inland Spousal Sponsorship

The inland spousal sponsorship program allows Canadian citizens or PRs with foreign partners living in Canada on a valid temporary residency permit (work permit, study visa, or visitor visa) to apply for their spouse to stay and work in Canada until their PR application is processed.

IRCC requires sponsors to be Canadian citizens or PRs living in Canada, at least 18 years old, and have not sponsored a spouse in the last five years. Sponsors must not be bankrupt, imprisoned, charged with a serious offense, under a removal order, or receiving social assistance (except for disability). The sponsor and sponsored person must also be legally married or recognized as common-law partners (living together for a minimum of 12 months) by IRCC.

Express Entry

Express Entry is an online system used to manage immigration applications for skilled workers aiming to live and work in Canada. It encompasses three programs: the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Federal Skilled Trades Program, and the Canadian Experience Class. Applicants create an online profile and receive a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score based on factors such as skills, work experience, language ability, and education.

Regular draws from the Express Entry pool invite top-ranking candidates to apply for permanent residence. This streamlined process ensures faster processing times, often around six months, and helps Canada attract skilled workers to meet labor market demands and support economic growth.

Federal Skilled Worker Program

The Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) is designed for skilled workers with foreign work experience who wish to immigrate to Canada permanently. This program assesses applicants based on their ability to become economically established in Canada. To qualify, candidates must meet minimum requirements in skilled work experience, language proficiency, and education.

Once eligible, applicants are placed into the Express Entry pool, where they are ranked based on the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). Candidates with the highest scores receive invitations to apply for permanent residence, ensuring that Canada attracts the most qualified individuals to contribute to its economy and society.

Canadian Experience Class

The Canadian Experience Class (CEC) is tailored for individuals who have already gained Canadian work experience and wish to become permanent residents. This program recognizes the value of having work experience in Canada, making it easier for individuals who have adapted to the Canadian labor market to transition to permanent residence.

To be eligible for the CEC, applicants must meet specific requirements, including having at least one year of skilled work experience in Canada within the last three years before applying. This work experience must be in a job classified under the National Occupational Classification (NOC) skill levels 0, A, or B. Additionally, candidates must demonstrate adequate language proficiency in either English or French to meet the job requirements.

Federal Skilled Trades Program

The Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) is designed for skilled workers who want to become permanent residents of Canada based on their qualifications in a skilled trade. To be eligible, applicants must have experience in a skilled trade, possess a job offer or a certificate of qualification in their trade, and demonstrate language proficiency in English or French.

This program recognizes the value of skilled tradespeople in Canada’s labor market and provides a streamlined path to permanent residency for those who meet the requirements. By focusing on practical skills and work experience, the FSTP helps ensure that Canada attracts and retains essential trades professionals to support its economic growth and development.
